Fundamental to object orientation is messaging. A message construct was created to permit one object to message another, invoking a service within that objects interface. Fundamental to implementing the message construct is the concept of an Object IDentifier (IOD) which uniquely identifies the object internally. This was another object extension that was fundamental to evolving the language and yet maintaining backwards compatibility with heritage systems.
