It evolved through numerous standardization releases as a powerful procedural language the contained all the language elements needed to implement the logical 3 tier components of Presentation, Application and Database in a physical 1 tier environment. It is a ANSI, FIPS and OSI standard, procedural language with an integrated database.
Within the last ten years, computing has evolved from tightly bound systems to loosely bound, distributed systems. If M did not evolve with the industry, it would be in danger of loosing its momentum. ESI felt that the technology had to evolve to objects or it would end up loosing market share...
